Rain-sensing wipers

By setting the wiper stalk control to 'Auto' a sensor positioned in the centre of the front windscreen detects rainfall and will automatically activate the front wipers. The sensor projects infrared light onto the windscreen at a 45 degree angle. If the glass is dry, most of the light is reflected back to the sensor. If water droplets are on the glass, the less light is reflected back to the sensor. If water droplets are on the glass, the less light is reflected back to the sensor. Sophisticated software within the sensor can even set the speed of the wipers by monitoring the build-up of rain between the sweeps.

Ford recommend deactivating the system (by setting the wiper stalk to 'off') when going through a carwash.
